Spouse

"Saint Joseph was the spouse of Mary. In the same way, each father sees himself entrusted with the mystery of womanhood through his own wife. Dear fathers, like St. Joseph, respect and love your spouse; and by your love and your wise presence, lead your children to God."
~ Pope Benedict XVI

In this quote, Pope Benedict highlights the importance of leading your spouse and children to God in love. We have a unique opportunity during the Advent season to grow closer to the Lord, as this season is all about preparing for the coming of our Savior.

In order to love and lead as husbands and fathers, we first must draw ourselves closer to the person of Christ. During Advent, one of the things I personally like to do is pray the Rosary. With our pursuit of the heart of Christ, we are ready to invite our families to enter into the season, too.

This year, slowing down during this season is not optional. The events of 2020 have given us time to reflect on the meaning of Christmas and perhaps even begin new Advent traditions. One thing I want to encourage you to do with your spouse and family is to read scripture every day. The Bible is a wonderful tool to help us learn who the person of Christ is, His family history, and how it all connects to our Church.

Today's reflection is written by Nick Longo. Nick is a husband and father, and serves as the Director of Evangelization at Holy Family Church in Fairmount.

> Do I love my spouse with the same love Joseph had for Mary? In what ways can I learn from Joseph to love more deeply and to listen for God's direction, rather than relying on my own understanding?
Lord Jesus, grant that my spouse and I may have a true love for each other. Grant that we may both be filled with faith and trust. Give us the grace to live with each other in peace and harmony, always bearing with one another's weaknesses and growing from each other's strengths. Help us to forgive one another's failings and grant us patience, kindness, cheerfulness and the spirit of placing the well-being of one another ahead of self. May the love that brought us together grow and mature with each passing year, bringing us both ever closer to You through our love for each other. Amen.
