Fatherhood

I wish to extend a particular word of encouragement to fathers
so that they may take St. Joseph as their model.

He who kept watch over the Son of Man is able to teach them
the deepest meaning of their own fatherhood.

~
Pope Benedict XVI

As we reflect together on St. Joseph’s example as Father, the point of reference is an uncertain time full of adversity for The Holy Family. In this fragile moment, St. Joseph’s love compels him to remain steadfast in his devotion to Our Blessed Mother Mary and to embrace the responsibility of raising Jesus as his own. His humble surrender to the will of God in his vocation emboldens each one of us to follow our call. In choosing to be the Father he did not have to be, St. Joseph shows us the dignity of freely choosing God’s will in every moment of our lives.

The parallel between St. Joseph and Our Heavenly Father is clear to see. Through the centuries, Our Heavenly Father remains true to His covenant promise to be with us and love us unconditionally. God the Father is our steadfast provider and protector.  No matter how difficult or uncertain the circumstances are that we find ourselves in this Advent Season, we are encouraged by St. Joseph’s example to have faith that God is with us. May St. Joseph accompany us on our journey through Advent just as he accompanied Our Blessed Mother Mary and Jesus, the Son of God, toward the Nativity in Bethlehem.

This reflection is offered by the Office of Family Life.

> What holds you back from going to God as a good Father, who loves you unconditionally and wants what is best for you?
Our Father,
who art in Heaven, hallowed by Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
